In the past, there have been collaborations between car designers and watch brands, but the partnership between Seiko, a Japanese watchmaker, and Giorgetto Giugiaro, a renowned Italian car designer, was notably different. One of Giugiaro's most iconic designs is the 7A28-7000, which was worn by the character Ripley in the movie "Aliens" directed by James Cameron. The watch was featured prominently in a couple of memorable scenes in the film.
 
Giugiaro intentionally disregarded the conventional rules of watch design, which is immediately apparent at first glance. The two-dimensional and angled edges, as well as the unique placement of chronograph buttons and the half-rectangular-shaped case, were not typically seen in Seiko watches and went against the norm.
 
The original Ripley model was issued in 1983 with different color configurations. It was successful in embodying Giorgetto Giugiaro's futuristic design style, and watch enthusiasts appreciated it immediately. The reissued versions from 2015 are contemporary timepieces that remain faithful to the original design, with their own unique style.

It is powered with the brand’s in-house quartz chronograph movement Caliber 7T12 which is capable of measuring 1/5scn and offers 5-year battery life. The movement is operated by the pushers located on the edges of a brick-like part just like the original design. The upper pusher operates the start/stop functions while the lower pusher resets the elapsed time.
 
There really isn’t a more sci-fi watch you can own and it's certainly a great addition regardless of the Aliens or the Giugiaro associations.
