For enthusiasts of vintage Seiko timepieces, few series are as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models, which have become synonymous with the introduction of this remarkable movement in horological history. These models embody Seiko's endeavor to deliver their first automatic chronograph with style. Today, they are commonly referred to as the "Pogue" models, owing to their association with Col. William Pogue and his iconic yellow-dialed variant.
Available in three captivating colorways—Yellow, Silver, and Blue—it goes without saying that regardless of personal preference, each holds its own distinctive charm and would be a standout piece in any collection.
This particular example from July of '69 is truly extraordinary. The dial, in a rich and velvety blue, is flawless and captivating. Being an early variant, the dial proudly displays the JDM Speedtimer designation at the left-center position.
The luminous material on the markers is original and has retained its integrity without any signs of degradation. The polished hour and minute hands exhibit no oxidation, and the luminous material remains untarnished, displaying no discoloration or deterioration. The chronograph hands sport a fiery red/orange color that both complements and provides a perfect contrast to the dial. The sweep hand features the original and correct two-piece design.
The outer bezel, adorned in crisp metallic red and blue, shows minimal signs of wear and retains its vibrant color without any fading. The case has remained unpolished, preserving the original factory finishes that are still clearly intact.
The chronograph functions are responsive, and following a recent service, the 6139A movement keeps near-perfect time. Completely original, this timepiece is a rare and exquisite example that would make a superb addition to any watch collection.
