Car designers collaborating with watch brands isn't unheard of, but the fusion of Japanese watchmaking prowess with the renowned Italian car designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro, was truly exceptional. Their partnership resulted in a collection of exceptionally unique timepieces, even by contemporary standards.

One standout creation from this collaboration is the iconic Seiko Giugiaro Speedmaster ‘Ripley’ 7A28-7000 Chronograph, famously featured in James Cameron’s 1986 blockbuster, Alien. Among Giugiaro's early ventures into watch design, this model showcased a striking Seiko quartz chronograph, powered by the pioneering Seiko quartz Cal. 7A28 movement. Notably, the Seiko 7A28 quartz chronograph was the world's first analog quartz chronograph movement, having debuted just a few years prior.

Upon its debut, the 'Ripley' was undeniably unconventional: Its distinct rectangular housing on the right flank of the case positioned the chronograph pushers vertically—an uncommon yet instantly recognizable design choice. Complemented by a vibrant yellow seconds track and a bold orange handset against a brushed steel backdrop, the watch exuded a unique charm, earning it a reputation as one of Seiko's quirkiest (and most coveted) references.
