Seiko's initial venture into GMT pilot's watches, the 6117-8000, has attained significant demand while remaining incredibly elusive to acquire.
Following Seiko's introduction of the World Timer during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 6117-8000 emerged as their second GMT timepiece. The Navigator Timer variant possesses a more streamlined design compared to the standard GMT layout and operates using the 6117 movement.
The dial showcases a captivating charcoal sunburst pattern beneath a lustrous lacquer finish, enclosed by an elevated chapter in black. It is adorned with silver hash marks and large square luminous markers at each hour. The sole burst of color originates from the vibrant red 24-hour hand, which, in combination with the bezel, allows for tracking time in a second time zone. The coin-edge style bezel rotates smoothly in both directions, providing just the right amount of tension to hold it securely in place once adjusted.
The silver and black 24-hour insert creates a pleasing contrast with the dial and exhibits minimal signs of wear. The case remains crisp and unpolished, retaining all of its original factory finishes, while its barrel shape flawlessly contours to the wrist.
Powering the watch is the robust 6117A caliber, which ensures near-perfect timekeeping in this particular timepiece.
For devoted vintage Seiko enthusiasts, this timepiece is an absolute must-have, and the opportunity to acquire one in such exceptional condition is a rare occurrence.
