While much of the spotlight on vintage Seiko chronographs shines on the iconic 613X “Suwa” models, Seiko’s Daini division answered back with their own 701X series, which was equally remarkable—and sometimes even ahead of its time.
 
Unlike the 613X’s, the 701X calibers have a distinct personality, trading traditional minute and hour registers for unique design features. This particular offering, a stunning New Old Stock Ref. 7017-6010 from April 1970, is an early “Proof” dialed variant with a bold, vintage racing vibe.
 
One standout feature is its case: a flared tonneau shape with elegantly tapered lugs and a thick bezel inset with a sleek black accent. Underneath, the dial showcases a matte black finish, with elongated luminous markers that enhance its striking design. The prominent “5” badge sits just below the Speed Timer branding, marking this as an early model with a 70m “Water Proof” indication. Surrounding the dial is a gloss-finished, rotating inner “count-up” bezel for added visual contrast and functionality.
 
The inner bezel rotates smoothly in either direction, and the polished baton hands offer effortless readability. The chronograph’s “flyback” mechanism is an impressive feature, allowing the vivid orange sweep hand to reset to zero instantly, without needing to stop first. The original H-link bracelet, still bearing its factory sticker on the clasp, complements the watch perfectly, giving it a pristine, just-made feel.
