The competition between Grand Seiko and King Seiko in the 1960s and '70s is a captivating tale that has captivated all who have heard it. During that time, Seiko had two factories dedicated to watch production. The Suwa factory manufactured Grand Seiko, while the Daini factory produced King Seiko. The purpose of having these separate factories was to foster internal competition and create the absolute best watches possible. This 1970 King Seiko exemplifies that goal.
The specific model we have today is the ref. 4502-7001, which belongs to the last five years of King Seiko's production. It features the manually wound, high-beat caliber 4502A, as indicated on the dial. As part of the renowned 45~ series of King Seiko movements, the 4502A operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour (vph), equivalent to 5 Hz, resulting in enhanced accuracy for the wearer. Additionally, the caliber 4502A incorporates an instantaneous date change function for the framed aperture at the three o'clock position.
The off-white dial showcases applied hour markers that are meticulously faceted, mirroring the design of the handset. Both the markers and hands lack luminescent material and instead exhibit clean black striping in their central sections. The case is another noteworthy aspect, bearing a striking resemblance to the renowned designs of Grand Seiko. It boasts clean lines, graceful angles, and a high-polish finish throughout. A notable detail is the gold King Seiko medallion placed at the center of the case back, a testament to the watch's exceptional construction and design quality.
This represents a truly rare opportunity to own a historic King Seiko timepiece.
