The Grand Seiko VFA pieces represented the pinnacle of achievement for any mechanical watch and were the ultimate realization of Grand Seiko's goal to create the world's finest timepiece, a goal they undoubtedly accomplished.

V.F.A. stands for "Very Fine Adjusted," and as the name suggests, the distinguishing feature of these watches was their exceptional precision. The Grand Seiko team achieved a level of accuracy that far surpassed the requirements of any chronometer certification. In fact, the testing program for these watches was more rigorous than that of any recognized authority.

The accuracy tests were conducted in six different positions. While the GS standard at that time called for a rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day, the V.F.A. models achieved an astonishing rate of +/-1 minute per month, a level of precision unprecedented for any mechanical wristwatch. The movements used in these watches were the Caliber 6185 and 6186 (automatic winding) and Caliber 4580 (manual winding), which were meticulously assembled and specially adjusted under extremely strict conditions by skilled craftsmen and women chosen for this task.

The model we are presenting is the Reference 6185-8021 manufactured by Suwa Seikosha. This model was introduced in Seiko's luxury catalog in 1971 and served as an update to the Reference 6185-8020. While both models appear similar, the 6185-8020 does not feature the "VFA" designation on the dial like the 6185-8021. Additionally, the 6185-8020 was powered by the caliber 6185A, whereas this model was upgraded to the caliber 6185B.

As examples of this exceptional quality become increasingly difficult to find, this presents a rare opportunity to acquire a stunning piece of horological history. Undoubtedly, it is considered a "Grail" watch for any enthusiast or collector of Vintage Grand Seiko timepieces.

  • The Grand Seiko VFA we're offering is in great condition: The case is unpolished, has hairline scratches, and still retains its razor-sharp edges. The dial is close immaculate and shows no signs of degradation around its edges. There are only 4 small blemishes that can be observed at the 12, 4, 5, and 6 O'clock hour markers that are close to invisible to the naked eye.

The crystal has very light scratches and doesn't impede the dial legibility. The crown is the correct one for this model and the case back appears to be worn and the stamped text remains clearly visible since it has been frequently used by its previous owner.

The service history is unknown and it runs at around 10s/day on a flat surface.
