Grand Seiko 61GS 6156-8000 Special

This one needs a moment. The factory stickers are still on the case. This watch was presented as a gift, placed back in its box, and never worn, not once. It was Special before it left the factory and it's been Special ever since.

The 61GS Special lineup debuted in Seiko's 1971 Number 1 catalog, slotting between the standard 61GS and the VFA flagships. The 6156-8000 is the day/date variant of that trio: The one with the bilingual day wheel and quick-set for both complications, a feature the older 6146 caliber couldn't offer. The 6156A inside runs at 36,000 vph and was held to the Grand Seiko Special Standard: ±3 seconds per day. A step below the VFA's ±2, yes, but a significant leap above the base 61GS's +6/-4, and achieved at a fraction of the flagship's price. The dial says Special, and it means it.

To call the Special a value play in the vintage GS market is, at this point, something of an understatement. The VFAs have long since crossed into five-figure territory, even in rough condition. The Specials, particularly in the 6156 day/date configuration, remain one of the most technically serious things you can own from this era without mortgaging anything.

The 61GS case grammar is here in full: HSS case with Zaratsu-polished surfaces, satin flanks, crystal glass, knurled crown, and proportions that look entirely right at 36mm. On the original five-row jubilee bracelet with satin and polished surfaces still in clear contrast, it looks exactly as Taro Tanaka intended.

Today's set is too good to be true: The watch comes with its original box and ultra-rare Special outer box, its Special certificate, and its purchase certificate.

The watch will be serviced once purchased and will take around 1-2 months to be completed.
