In the late '60s, Grand Seiko was racing toward horological perfection. After Suwa Seikosha’s 1968 release of the 61GS, the first Japanese automatic 10-beat movement, it wasn’t long before things got even more serious. By 1969, the 61GS VFA (Very Fine Adjusted) emerged, boasting stunning accuracy but also a hefty price tag, leaving a gap between standard models and the top-tier VFAs.
Enter the 61GS Specials. Debuting in Seiko’s 1971 number one catalog, these watches were engineered to bridge the gap with three standout references: the 6155-8000 (date only), the 6156-8000 (day-date), and the crown jewel Ref. 6156-8010. With its faceted sapphire crystal, hardened stainless steel case, and luxurious dial layout, the 8010 took everything the short-lived Arabesques tried to do, and did it better.
Powering this model is the 6156 caliber, built to the Grand Seiko Special Standard, promising an impressive ±3 seconds per day. Unlike earlier 61GS models, this one features a quick-set day and date with a bilingual day wheel.
This example offered here is a stunner. Its flat white dial is understated yet elegant, with thin stick hands and slim indices giving it a refined and timeless feel. The faceted crystal adds visual depth, catching light beautifully from every angle and the HSS case is factory sharp.
Condition? Practically untouched. The case looks unworn with barely a mark, the caseback still has the original blue protective film, and it even comes with its original buckle and box. A true gem.
The watch will be serviced once purchased and will take around 1-2 months to be completed.
