The Ref.85899, also recognized as the third and final iteration of the Seiko Champion Alpinist series, made its debut in 1964, featuring the robust 851 movement. This exceptional reference was originally available in two distinct variations: One with a steel-plated case and this particular example adorned in an elegant gold-plated casing, boasting a dial that distinctly sets it apart from its predecessors.

While this variant undeniably inherits certain traits from its Alpinist lineage, it exudes a more contemporary aesthetic. Its dial is elegantly understated, with a cream backdrop adorned by gold-plated indexes and dauphine- umed hands, serving as a respectful nod to its heritage.

A noteworthy feature of this reference is the inclusion of tiny lumed spheres atop the indexes, enhancing legibility in low-light conditions. Additionally, the etched case back is elegantly marked with 'EGP,' signifying its Electro Gold Plated status both inside and out.

The EGP example we have for sale is a deadstock find and it is stunning: It has aged beautifully, with the dial showcasing a uniform, captivating patina. Notably, the case, often susceptible to peeling, remains in impeccable condition. The caseback still retains its original blue protective film with the etching still intact. This EGP also comes complete with its original leather straps and the iconic Seiko Alpinist tag, adding the final touch of perfection.
