If you know us, you know we love vintage, especially Credor. But today, we're offering something modern yet just as special: the Credor GCBD997, created with artist Akira Yamaguchi.
The Credor GCBD997 stands out for its unique collaboration with painter Akira Yamaguchi. Born in Tokyo in 1969 and trained in oil painting, Yamaguchi blends Western techniques with traditional Japanese aesthetics. His intricate, bird’s-eye landscapes and battlefield scenes span across sculpture, manga, and installations. Recognized with the Kobayashi Hideo Award in 2013, he later became Kiryu City’s first artistic ambassador.
Yamaguchi’s influence is felt throughout the design, especially the dial—a striking fusion of art and mechanics. Inspired by the Japanese concept of suki (elegant taste), he transforms the balance wheel into a source of motion, sending ripples through the dial. Between 6 and 9 o’clock, a sapphire layer reveals this heartbeat, surrounded by mechanical motifs that create depth through layered 2D and 3D effects. Sixty custom indexes form a rhombus pattern, playing with light and shadow to give the flat surface a sculptural feel.
The caseback is mostly enclosed, save for a small sapphire window that offers a peek at the movement. Surrounding it, intricate engravings depict a poetic scene: A moon-like balance wheel, silver grass swaying, wildflowers blooming, and flowing curves that echo celestial orbits.
Powering the watch is the ultra-thin Credor Calibre 6899, just 1.98mm thick. Based on the Seiko 68 series developed by Daini Seikosha since 1969, it beats at 3Hz and offers a 37-hour power reserve.
Whether you’re drawn to Yamaguchi’s work or simply captivated by this singular collaboration, the GCBD997, limited to 15 pieces, is unlike any other: It barely resembles a traditional watch dial, and that’s precisely its magic.
