The Citizen Auto "Phynox" was the company's first automatic wristwatch, launched in May 1958. Known simply as the Auto, it had a brief production run of about three years as Citizen developed its ‘Jet’ movement, which became its main automatic line starting in October 1961.

Despite the anticipated launch of the popular Jet range in the early 1960s, Citizen needed an automatic watch to compete with Seiko’s offerings sooner rather than later, particularly before the introduction of the Gyro Marvel. Thus, Citizen released its first automatic watch, the caliber 3KA, in the spring of 1958. The 3KA featured bi-directional winding, debuting a year ahead of the Gyro Marvel, and was competitively priced against Seiko’s models.

The watch case is made of stainless steel, including a screw-in case back for water protection. It boasts a minimalist and clean two-tone design, with golden applied hour markers and three hands, including a central sweeping seconds hand, all without any luminous material.
